5 Home Improvement Tips To Avoid Costly Mistakes

Home Improvement Contractor Vs DIY Tips

1) DIY or Contractor?

That is the question and you must be realistic with yourself, otherwise this decision can cause you many costly mistakes!
As much as I love Walt Disney’s great quote “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible”, doing your home renovation or remodelling project is not the best place to test this out.

Be realistic about your skill set as while the satisfaction and perceived savings from doing the job yourself may be appealing, this can quickly change to a costly mistake if you realize part way through, or worse still.. after the project is completed, that you really need a professional contractor in now to fix your mistakes.
Be an optimistic realist ūüôā

2) For DIYers… Get The Right Tools

If DIY home improvement is your decision, getting the right tools for the job may cost a little upfront, however the benefits far outweigh any initial investment in tools that you will still have after the job is completed.

3) Choose the Right Contractor

If do-it-yourself repairs and renos are not your thing, firstly, congratulations for recognizing this in the first place. Secondly, you now need a quality, reliable and reputable contractor to do the job for you.

Ensure the contractor is licensed to work in your area and has applicable insurances.
Check is they are registered with key industry organisations.
Confirm the fine print and guarantees, don’t be too proud to ask for help if you don’t understand any part of a contract or agreement prior to signing.
Look at prior samples of your preferred contractor’s work.
Know your responsibilities and give the contractor guidelines for working in and/or around your home. If they are reputable professionals they will work well with you.

4) Don’t Cut Corners

You’ll regret it in the long run!. Do it once and do it properly, and remember quality over quantity will always be the best option both from a dollar point of view over time and aesthetics.

5) Planning

Sounds obvious but unfortunately is an often overlooked or underestimated step. Decide exactly what it is you want to do, prioritize, write a plan and budget. Don’t cut corners and be precise.
